Lunch at home

I have to admit, for someone who enjoys cooking, I am spectacularly bad at lunch. Specifically, lunch for myself, here, at home. It’s true that I’m bad at lunch when Bill’s here too, but even that one extra person is a lot easier to cook for than just me.

I don’t end up eating so much as nibbling and grazing through the day most days. I have a middling to decent breakfast, nibble and graze my way until dinner, where I tend to have something good that I’ve cooked. What this results in are days when I grossly over-consume and days when I nearly forget to eat entirely. On another axis, I have days where I eat pretty well (say, days when there’s a bag of clementines around) and days when I eat horrible (the days I bake with Grace are usually days I end up eating almost nothing but cookies between breakfast and dinner).… Continue reading →

My brain is full

I am about 100% sure of one thing: everyone who reads this blog knows me personally. I admit I could be wrong, but I’d be shocked as hell.

So, since I’m so confident that only people who know me read, I can be confident that it surprises no one to hear I went to “State of the Plate 2010”:http://stateoftheplate2010.com/ today. It is, as you can imagine, something I was extremely interested in. And it’s fairly close to where I live (as is so is all of CTA-accessible Chicagoland), so I had to attend.

I live tweeted as much as I could, but my comments may or may not have been as insightful as the others tweeting the experince. Namely, others tweeted more quotes and comments, so maybe I was more boring.… Continue reading →

Not much to say today

Hi guys,

I’m a bit out of it today, and so I don’t really think I’ll get a full recipe entry up today. I did manage to cook dinner from a cookbook, though, so that’s exciting. Pumpkin tureen soup! Hooray!

I’ll get back on track tomorrow, promise. With tonight’s recipe we have about six queued recipes, and more to come. Tomorrow we’ll be eating dinner out (though we don’t know what yet), as we’re having a cheap date at a local place for a champagne tasting. The timing is such that we can’t get home for dinner, then go out for the tasting. So, that’s exciting.

Since I am do feel bad about not giving you a recipe tonight, lemme tell you what’s on this week’s menu (through Monday).… Continue reading →

New Mexico

We’re in New Mexico again, visiting for my mother’s birthday (which has passed, but this was the weekend she wanted to celebrate).

As you can imagine, I’m not doing a lot of cooking right now. I have, however, decided that I’d like to get a jump start on menu planning for next week. This is somewhat augmented by the fact that I’d planned three meals for while Bill’s mother was in town, and then we did not eat at home. (Thankfully, I had not bought the ingredients for anything yet, so no money or food was wasted on those plans.)

Unfortunately, this planning is also hampered by not having my cookbooks with me, and not knowing what’s coming in our CSA. I have gotten a “sneak peek”, but planning around previous sneak peeks went poorly for us when we didn’t get any beets (among other planned for things).… Continue reading →

Quickie post

The worst part about teaching a pregnant woman who doesn’t speak English very well how to bake cookies is that you can’t chow down on cookie dough in front of her.

The best part, though, is much better. And that’s baking cookies with a new friend, and getting to chow down on them together, and watching her learn after she just put you through your paces on the piano. At least, that’s my best part.… Continue reading →
