Happy New Year

It turns out I’m not great with the milestones here on MetaCookbook. I realized awhile back that we had crossed 100 entries (a small, but should be noteworthy milestone) and I hadn’t even noticed. Last night, while talking to Kristi L2, I thought we’d posted more than 150 entries, but looking at it today, we’re not quite there yet. I probably won’t notice when we do[1]. I didn’t notice that we’re actually 7 months into this challenge, not the 6 I was thinking.

I did notice, though, that we’re coming up on one of the most important milestones for the challenge we’ve given ourselves. In fact, I noticed it enough that I’d hoped to hit it by the end of the year. Alas, we did not manage to even cook, much less post, 100 recipes this year.… Continue reading →

We’re back! Just in time for the year’s end.

Hello, all! Just a quick note here before I (hopefully) start bombarding your RSS readers with posts.

As you can see, there’s a pile of recipes in the queue. I apologize for not getting more of them up sooner, but I’m on to tackling them now. Upon our return from New Mexico, I fell ill basically until the holidays hit. So the holidays were spent being happy and merry, respectively, and yesterday was spent getting the house back in order after traveling, being ill, and being happy and merry.

We have barely cooked upon our return. We cooked a boneless rib roast and mashed potatoes for Christmas dinner, and Bill stepped into the kitchen yesterday to turn the leftovers into a tasty meal. I am incredibly lucky to have such a good cook living with me.… Continue reading →

Update

Hello, all.

I want to apologize for the lack of posts since Wednesday. A confluence of two unavoidable events caused it. Well, one unavoidable event and one instance of me being spacey.

The unavoidable event was flying to New Mexico yesterday, and all the chaos that entails. We have many wonderful loved ones here, all of whom need some of our time. Especially as we’re here effectively to celebrate the holidays, there’s a lot going on. Such as a party this afternoon at Bill’s mother’s house. So yesterday was not a great day for posting.

The other event happened Wednesday night.

We had decided we wanted to try two recipes a second time, the “Steak, Mushroom, and Ale Pie”:http://metacookbook.com/archives/140-71-Steak,-Mushroom-and-Ale-Pie.html and the “Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Garlic.”:http://metacookbook.com/archives/146-75-Roasted-Brussels-Sprouts-with-Garlic.html… Continue reading →

Photos

I’m waiting for the “Coq Au Vin”:http://metacookbook.com/archives/142-73-Coq-Au-Vin.html photos to upload to flickr, and I am struck by a few things. One, I really take too many photos. Partially, it’s because I remember learning in photography class that it was a good way to learn (and I do). But it’s also because I just don’t frame a photo very well. My good friend Mel has a true talent for photography, and she says that her eye is just always framing shots. Mine is not. I struggle with framing every moment I shoot. I truly enjoy photography, but I recognize that I’m rather bad at it. (We won’t, for now, discuss the fact that either my camera or I is “not quite level.”:http://www.flickr.com/photos/metacookbook/5232960958/in/set-72157625529838404/)

Something that makes it worse is my lighting.… Continue reading →

Lunch at home

I have to admit, for someone who enjoys cooking, I am spectacularly bad at lunch. Specifically, lunch for myself, here, at home. It’s true that I’m bad at lunch when Bill’s here too, but even that one extra person is a lot easier to cook for than just me.

I don’t end up eating so much as nibbling and grazing through the day most days. I have a middling to decent breakfast, nibble and graze my way until dinner, where I tend to have something good that I’ve cooked. What this results in are days when I grossly over-consume and days when I nearly forget to eat entirely. On another axis, I have days where I eat pretty well (say, days when there’s a bag of clementines around) and days when I eat horrible (the days I bake with Grace are usually days I end up eating almost nothing but cookies between breakfast and dinner).… Continue reading →
