Links! For YOU!

Well, it was bound to happen, right? After not quite three years in one place, it’s time to move again.

It should be fun. You guys will get to peek into a brand new kitchen sometime next month or early May! Ok, well, moving is never fun. But I mean fun for you guys to see some more changes.

So, that’s a quick update on us. However, I thought you guys might be interested in the following three food-related links.

Over at Us News there’s a list of strategies to reduce your personal food waste. I know that, awhile back, I learned how to store cheese properly from my friend Jessie, and it’s helped immensely. However, the link recommends against freezing milk, and I completely disagree with that.… Continue reading →

CSA Delivery Tomorrow. Got Back in Town Last Night.

Bill and I got back from Baltimore late last night. I think we walked in the door about 11:45 pm or so. We got home, had a little snack, and collapsed into bed.

We were lucky[1] this time around. The CSA only delivers bi-weekly during the winter, and so we left just after a delivery and the next delivery will be tomorrow night. Thus, we didn’t have to make any special arrangements for our food. That was nice.

However, it makes me want to hold off on grocery shopping. At least until the delivery hits. I have gotten a “sneak peek” of what we’ll be getting, but past experience has made me quite wary of relying on the sneak peek email. Sometimes they just can’t get you a thing they expected to pick, or sometimes you plan for a pound of turnips and they give you three baby turnips.… Continue reading →

Pinch Spice Market

I don’t know when we discovered Pinch Spice Market, but I’m really glad we did. It’s a great little business here in Chicago, on Milwaukee Avenue, maybe half a blog away from the Western-O’Hare Blue line stop. More importantly, it’s near Ipsento Coffee, which is where Bill is getting most of his coffee beans right now, so it’s a great place that’s conveniently located for us. Though, to be honest, I love the place so much I now go buy my spices there whether we’re going to Ipsento or not.

My Chicago readers need to check this place out. The selection is good, the interior gorgeous, and most importantly the proprietors, Mike and Shoebocks[1], are incredibly friendly and helpful. Not only are they quick to help find a spice or fill an order, they’re happy to answer any question, or even just chat for a bit.… Continue reading →

Cthuloid Onions

A couple days ago, I tweeted a photo and a comment about having a cute onion in the house.

Our red onions have been around for a bit, but I’m not sure how long. So when I discovered one had sprouted, it wasn’t a huge surprise. The shape of the sprouts, though, reminded me of tentacles, and so I had to share.

The problem, though, came up the next day when I discovered another onion sprouting. This one less cutely, and more effectively. Also, for some reason, the onion itself is smaller. Some of our garlic is sprouting too, but I’m learning how to cut around that.

What I’m wondering, though, and what makes this an ingredient (and gardening) question, is what my readers think I should DO with these sprouters, especially the onions.… Continue reading →

Food Inventory & What We’re Eating This Week.

I’m doing an inventory of my food today (and probably tomorrow). This is prompted by a couple of things, not the least of which were my recent musings on well-stocked freezers & pantries.

Bill and I discussed, this morning, that maybe we can get by for awhile without doing any grocery shopping. For me, a pipe dream would be to make it until after our next CSA delivery[1] without shopping, except maybe for milk. That delivery would occur a week from tomorrow, meaning I’d be shopping a week from Wednesday. I think that’s asking too much of ourselves, partially because this upcoming Saturday is when I’m hosting the winners of my homebrew and home-cookin’ giveaway, but a gal can dream. If I can hold out until at least Saturday, to hit Green City Market or Logan Square Farmers Market, I’d still feel pretty excited.… Continue reading →
