Yes, I drank a beer made with bugs. Yes, it was beautiful. Yes, it tasted great. I would like more, please.

I went to an event that paired food with beer. Of course. BUT! Also with performance art. Mostly comedy. It was a fun, fun time.

I finally got to try a cocktail that really involved edible flowers. It was fantastic.

Which made me all the sadder to realize I will not be growing these guys or any other edible flowers this year. Time got away from me, and I didn’t get my plot planted before we left for a long trip. Someone else will be using it this year, though I’ll still be part of the community around the garden.

I tried Indonesian food for the first time.… Continue reading →

Let Us Eat Barbeque!

For the last couple of weeks, my friend Seth and I have been planning to go to County Barbeque together, but also with some friends. Only, we haven’t really given enough notice for friends to plan to join us.

So we’re giving you notice today that on 21 April 2015, at 7:30 pm, we will dine at County Barbeque. Address is 1352 W Taylor St, Chicago, IL 60607. We are hoping you, you, you, and especially you will join us. Seth agrees.

Seth’s never been to County. I’ve been a few times. They have a solid draft list, bottled Palomas that are killer, fantastic chicken, and really great corn pudding. They have other things too, but I enjoy the chicken too much to tell you what else.… Continue reading →

A Bit More on the “Wheel” and the Food “Spoke”

I spent a great deal of time and effort figuring out what to say in my last post. Originally, it was less about not attending Good Food Festival and more about the disillusionment I’ve been feeling, but as GFF approached, and as I gave a lot of thought to it and heard a great deal about it, that post crystallized some of it in my head. While I’ll likely post from time to time, more on my thoughts about the messiness that is food, both politically and in the kitchen, I realized I had a short follow-up on “the wheel.”

So, fast recap: I tend to envision social progress as effectively a wheel, and people push on spokes they care about. All that pushing, and the wheel moves.… Continue reading →

To Do and Not To Do

Last year, I didn’t go to Good Food Fest Chicago due to a very frustrating mix up with them. This year, I just… didn’t.

It’s a little odd, I have to say. Last year was easier. I was sustained in my not going by my sheer frustration with FamilyFarmed.Org, who puts on the conference. This year, I made no conscious decisions and ended up not going. And, as it arrives here in Chicago, I find myself with a few regrets. But only a few.

My main interest and passion, when it comes to Good Food Fest, is the food policy summit. And, if I’d thought about it more, I maybe would have gone to just that. But, by now, I’m scheduled to work. And that’s a better choice, I think.… Continue reading →

Some Interesting Reading

One of the things that has been kind of perpetually on my mind is reading. How much I should be doing, what I should be reading, etc.

I never come to an answer. It makes me kinda batty, honestly. I feel like there’s GOT to be some sort of rough guidelines for how much one needs to take in to stay on top of things, and also just to be a better writer, but I’ve never figured that out.

I keep reading, though. Sometimes a lot. Sometimes a little. And much of it is interesting.

So, with that in mind, I decided I’d share a short reading list of links I’ve encountered recently that I think are interesting. While I’ve encountered them recently, they may not all be very recently written.… Continue reading →
