Some Interesting Reading

One of the things that has been kind of perpetually on my mind is reading. How much I should be doing, what I should be reading, etc.

I never come to an answer. It makes me kinda batty, honestly. I feel like there’s GOT to be some sort of rough guidelines for how much one needs to take in to stay on top of things, and also just to be a better writer, but I’ve never figured that out.

I keep reading, though. Sometimes a lot. Sometimes a little. And much of it is interesting.

So, with that in mind, I decided I’d share a short reading list of links I’ve encountered recently that I think are interesting. While I’ve encountered them recently, they may not all be very recently written.… Continue reading →

Alan McCormick of Growler Fills on BBC14

Back when I first posted various bloggers’ thoughts on the 2014 Beer Bloggers’ Conference, I mentioned that three folks had answered a bit more thoroughly than the rest, and I would share them later. As I tackle NaNoWriMo, the time is now. The first set of answers is from Alan McCormick of Growler Fills. Alan moderated this year’s “Ethics in Beer Blogging” panel, and then spent a fabulous lunch with me discussing ethics in beer. Thus, he was absolutely on my list of folks I was curious about. When I got his response to my email, the opening paragraph let me know I had some useful information to share.

Enjoy!

Alan McCormick: In my answer to the first question I took the liberty to explain the answer to a question you did not ask.… Continue reading →

Four San Diego Photos

Not necessarily the best, but since I just got back from San Diego, I thought I’d show you four fun photos I took.

I suspect this will be Bill’s favorite photo. It shows just how far I’ve come since the days we started dating and I didn’t like coffee. Now I’m taking the hand-grinder, aeropress, and whole beans when traveling alone. My friend Jen had a comment on that. (She’s not wrong to wonder.)

I have no idea how large the brewery who makes this beer, Warsteiner is, but I know they are German (though that page is USA), have been passed down to (through?) their ninth-generation of owner, and make a damn tasty pilsner. Not as hoppy as some would prefer, possibly from too big a brewery for some (there was some implication of that around), and with a faintly funky aroma.… Continue reading →

Throwback Tuesday

Well, I’m in San Diego, having just finished attending Beer Bloggers’ Conference. I’m spending a few days checking out the zoo, pondering and discussing the con, and otherwise checking out this fine town. As such, I thought a quick post of links from December 2012 or later might be fun reading. My thinking is one for each category.

They’re not inherently the best posts from the first two and a half years of the blog, but they’re ones that are memorable, or interesting, or something. I hope you enjoy.

Time to Goddamn Learn

TW: Rape.

This is going to be short. I don’t have a lot of patience for this bullshit:

If you need a goddamn “panty dropper” to “get laid” then you are engaging in sexual assault.

Maybe you didn’t know this. Time to goddamn learn. No, it’s not ok if there’s also a “boxer/briefs dropper.” Sure, as a friend pointed out, then it’s equally targeting men and women, but it’s a motherfucking race to the bottom at that point. It’s some bullshit if “men as targets too” is the end result of working toward “equality.”

Just because he is/she is/they are drunk DOESN’T MEAN HE WANTS/SHE WANTS/THEY WANT TO FUCK.

And even if they seem to want to, doesn’t mean they always want to.… Continue reading →
