My last post mentioned I have recently returned from San Diego, and alluded to the fact that there was a conference and some beer in my life while I was there.

Yup. I went to Beer Bloggers Conference in San Diego this year. It was my first time attending this conference, and I had a nice time. I also, as you can imagine, brought home a few things. However, I realized that more fun than bringing home things just for myself was bringing things home to give away. I gave some glassware to my friend Nicky, and decided to give the rest away to a couple of readers here.

Bramble Rye is Memories. Those Made and Those to be Made.

This was supposed to be up last Friday, but I missed. You can have it today. The host this month, for #84 is Oliver J Grey and he asked for “alternative beer reviews.” This is mine. I have never had a chocolate covered raspberry. I feel they must exist, somewhere. But I’ve never had one. And, frankly, I’m fine with this. I adore chocolate, but raspberries are generally not my thing.

85 Degrees. High ABVs. $2 Water.

If you check out the #goose25 hashtag on twitter, you’ll get a sense of how I spent my Sunday. It was a vaguely miserable experience, and not one I’d expected out of one of my favorite beer companies.

Even so, just a vaguely miserable experience wouldn’t have motivated me to write anything for the blog. What’s prompted me to put up a post on the matter was Goose Island Beer Company’s decision that water should only be available for $2/bottle at the event. I noticed this almost immediately after entering the fest and was a little shocked.

This event was outdoors, in a largely unshaded space, on a day with an expected high of 85F. They were serving beers up to 14% ABV. The only water to be had was for sale.… Continue reading →

The ONLY Thing That Will Cause Me to Leave the House on Black Friday

Because, seriously, Black Friday has never, ever sounded like a good time.

So what tomfoolery was I engaged in, being IN A LINE on Black Friday? In the morning, even!

Beer, of course. Good beer.

Actually? Leaving the house on Black Friday seems so hazardous, it had to be better than “good” beers. “Excellent” beers. “Rare” beers. “That one beer I’ve been trying to get my hands on for a year or more.” These are motivating.

And motivate me, they did. As they have for three years running, now. In 2010, it was Bourbon County Brand Stout (BCBS) Rare. In 2011, it was King Henry. In 2012? Well, this year was a little different.
