BACON!

Okay, quickie post. I’m planning to write something up later too (after I make gluten-free cookies), but I had to share.

Today we had the first of the bacon from our hog. It was super tasty! I actually liked it better than what we normally have from Meadow Haven. This still had the delicious flavor of the pig, but was less salty.

Which, to be honest, probably means we need to eat it faster. Tragic?

We also had chocolate-blueberry semi-whole wheat pancakes. They sound better than they were. Next time, less whole wheat flour & more chocolate.… Continue reading →

[35] Blueberry Pie (pg 132)

The awesome thing about being the pie boss? You get to pick the pies for the day!

Blueberry is probably my second favorite kind of pie, so it definitely made the list of pies to make for the rehearsal dinner. I also chose it because of the simplicity of the recipe (yes, that’ll be a running theme), and the fact that I suspect many people like blueberry pie.

You guys have to understand. I was making pie for a bunch of people, some of whom I barely knew. Then there was the groom’s family!

Okay, I’m just joshing. I know most of my own family fairly well, but not their pie preferences, oddly enough. Of the groom’s family, I mostly knew him. I’d met his mother and brother once each, and we did not discuss pie amongst the three of us (a tragic failing of our conversation, I can see now).… Continue reading →

[31] Blueberry Lime Jam

Slowly, but surely, I’m working through the queue of recipes I built up before my sister’s wedding (and the one or two I made there, and the one or two I’ve made since I’ve been home).

Really, the cooking part of this exercise is going a lot better than the posting. The posting is vital, though, as it’s a big motivator to keep up with the challenge. And, honestly, we’ve been behind on the posting for long enough that I do get the feeling that if we just put the oomph into catching up, the posting will be a lot more fun and stay basically caught up. The real challenge is on the days when we manage to make multiple recipes at once.
